Life With Braces
Life with Braces: Care & Maintenance
- 1
Oral Hygiene: Keeping Your Teeth and Braces Clean
Good oral hygiene is essential during orthodontic treatment. Brackets and wires can trap food particles and plaque, increasing the risk of cavities, gum irritation, and staining if teeth are not cleaned properly.
Brushing with Braces
Use a soft-bristled or electric toothbrush to clean around brackets, wires, and along the gumline. Brush thoroughly after meals whenever possible, paying special attention to areas where food can become trapped.
Flossing with Braces
Floss at least once a day using orthodontic floss threaders or other braces-friendly flossing tools. A water flosser can also help remove plaque and debris from hard-to-reach areas.
Helpful Tip
Keeping a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss with you at school, work, or while traveling can make it easier to maintain healthy habits and keep your treatment progressing as planned.

Foods to Avoid & Braces-Friendly Meals
The foods you eat can play an important role in protecting your braces and keeping treatment on track. Hard, sticky, chewy, and sugary foods can damage brackets and wires or increase the risk of cavities and plaque buildup.
Foods to Avoid
Avoid sticky foods such as caramel, gum, and gummy candies; hard foods like nuts, ice, and popcorn kernels; chewy foods including bagels and tough meats; and sugary snacks and beverages that can contribute to tooth decay.
Braces-Friendly Foods
Soft foods are generally the safest choice during treatment. Good options include yogurt, cheese, soft fruits, cooked vegetables, eggs, fish, shredded chicken, pasta, rice, soups, and oatmeal.
Helpful Tip
Cut firm foods such as apples and carrots into small pieces rather than biting directly into them. Simple adjustments like this can help prevent damage to your braces and keep your treatment progressing smoothly.

Handling Minor Braces Issues
It’s normal to experience occasional minor issues during orthodontic treatment. Most can be managed easily until you’re able to contact our office.
Poking or Loose Wire
- Try gently repositioning the wire with a cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil.
- Apply orthodontic wax to any area causing irritation.
- If the wire is causing significant discomfort, contact our office for assistance.
Loose Bracket
- If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and call our office to schedule a repair.
- If the bracket becomes completely detached, save it and bring it with you to your appointment.
Soreness or Discomfort
- Mild soreness is common after braces are placed or adjusted and typically improves within a few days.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers may help alleviate discomfort.
- Soft foods such as yogurt, soups, smoothies, and pasta can make eating more comfortable.
- Warm saltwater rinses can help soothe irritated gums and cheeks.
